1. Briefly describe the position being requested (for example, biology faculty with expertise in anatomy).
FT Reference and Instruction Librarian: First Year Experience Librarian

Please see attached word document for complete request.

2. Describe the rationale and motivation for the request. Include information on program LOAD; ratios of full-time FTEF to hourly FTEF and full-time to part-time faculty; recent faculty retirements; any mandates and regulations affecting the position; and any additional reasons, including impact on the community at large.
If your answer is more than 2000 characters (approximately 300 words), please upload a Word document below (10 MB or less). If you’re not sure, please upload your answer. Please upload text only; we cannot ensure that non-text such as images, diagrams, or charts will be retained in the final submission.
Increased teaching load with College 1, ENG 100/105, additional instruction sessions for courses across disciplines, support for Year One Promise, Guided Pathways, and increased support for students impacted by AB 705. In addition, the Library offers three sections of LIBR 100: Introduction to Library Research taught every semester both in-person and online. The Library requests a tenure-track First Year Experience Librarian to perform reference, instruction, and outreach with an emphasis on supporting all first-year students, including those from the Year One Program, the Learning Communities, Project Change, first-generation college students, HSI-STEM/METaS, veterans, and first-year International Students. Working closely with the Director of Equity, the First Year Experience Librarian will also collaborate with international education, Counseling, and Guided Pathways to organize first-year oriented workshops, tours, and programming that support student success, and equity and access to collections, technology, and services.

This additional position will allow the library to maintain and grow the level of instruction as well as give space for other full-time librarians to work on initiatives such as the statewide Library Services Platform (LSP), Open Educational Resources (OER), create and integrate policies and procedures, make resources ADA accessible, explore Distance Education support, and expand eResources, collections, and services. Technical services demands impact other librarians’ duties by limiting time, participation, and resources to critical areas, such as OER initiatives and supporting distance education. In particular, it is essential the Library lead the Online Educational Resources efforts on campus and be ahead of the curve in addressing textbook affordability. We have also provided reference consultations beyond the Library at the Learning Center every Tuesday, which requires coverage for instruction and 2 reference desks.
