| The Dental Assisting Program (AS and CA) at College of San Mateo is a two semester program. Accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation and provides a comprehensive education in preparation to take the California State Board exam and the National board Exam. The program promotes and supports the following Institutional Priorities: Priority 1: Student Success. With an attrition rate of only 1%, for the last 2 years, the goal of the application selection is to improve in class performance. Qualitative and anticdotally faculty perception is better student performance & learning. Priority 2: Academic Excellence. Successful completion of the dental assisting program requires that students receive a minimum of a 75% in all their courses both didactic and laboratory. Priority 3: Relevant, High Quality Programs. The need for dental assistants in the county is very high. There are rarely enough students to meet all the request from county dentists for interns from CSM. | Nwe course was developed, DENT 730 Occupational Safety and Infection Control in Dentistry, the intention of the addition of this course to the curriculum was to consolidate the infection control education. Previously taught throughout the program inefficiently. Dent 743 Coronal Polish and Dent 744 Dental Sealants courses, each 0.5 units, these were banked and the information was folded into the Dent 741 Chairside and Dent 722 Dental Materials courses taught in the spring. These curriculum changes demonstrated a more effective program schedule. | |

| The Dental Assisting program student population has changed and the equity gaps present to be much closer than in the past, as a program we have improved our efficiency to reduce the cost to the student for materials and instruments. Academically we now have a tutor and faculty are opening up labs to work with students during their office hours. This has had positive results for our students. | |

| Our program can not meet the labor demand as we have very small supply of Dental Assistants entering our program and the labor need is larger at this point based on a number of factors. This supports our need to market differently to be more attractive to students unsure of what they want as a career option. | |

| Our student ourcomes for certification is 299, average 30 per year. We have continual increase in numbers of degrees. Once our students get into the program they are very sucessful. Enrollment needs to be higher to keep that trend going. Low enbrollment is a concern. | |

| The Dental Assistant program student success is very good at 100% completion rate last year (2018) and 99% the year prior (2017). We are constantly promoting student equity and addressing our student’s needs. The professional development our faculty will need is more canvas training and teaching methodology. | |
