| The Learning Disabilities Specialist/DRC Counselor position would serve two importan areas of need: Providing academic and disability management counseling to students who have disabilities and providing learning disability assessment for those students who do not have disability documentation but experience difficulties learning. It is estimated that 10% of the population has some form of learning disability. It would be beneficial to the DRC and CSM student popultion to have a full time specialist in this field who can provide outreach, LD assessments, study strategies based on individual strengths and learning styles and begin building a rapport with the campus community to ensure we are capturing those students who would benefit the most.
The Learning Disabilities Specialist position has been vacant for two years (retirement, resignation) and has been backfilled with two part-time adjunct faculty. Adding the credentials for a DRC counselor and splitting the roles would be most beneficial to our program needs.
The DRC department has grown by 45-48% since the last program review. We currently serve approximately 830 students per semester (unduplicated numbers) with only one FTE DRC Counselor. An additional LD Specialist/Counselor would provide the much-needed support for our student population. The California State Chancellor's Office recommends that a Learning Disabilities Specialist evaluate Psychoeducational reports and IEPs for new DRC students listed under Specific Learning Disabilities who are transitioning from high school to CSM and who are requesting DRC services. Due to the complex nature of evaluating adequate LD assessment and results, this has been a challenge given the limited hours of our part time staff and the requests for new student intakes with students who have been identified as Learning Disabilities (LD) in K-12. Providing assessment for LD for those who are not yet identified as having a disability is a need that should be filled.
3. Discuss how the position will help the department and/or division meet goals and support student learning as described in most recent program review.

| The COUND/LD Specialist will help identify CSM students who are in need of academic support services who may find college level courses more challenging. By offering learning disability assessment, study strategies support, the LD Specialist will improve student success. In addition, the Counselor will offer disability-related counseling services and academic support services that are much needed in the DRC.
A full time Counselor/Learning Disabilities Specialist will be requested in this program review cycle. Currently, we have one counselor meeting the needs of approximately 815 students per semester. With one hour intake appointments for new DRC students and one hour for comprehensive Student Educational Plans (SEP). One counselor does not sufficiently meet the demands of our student population. The current recommendation is approximately 412 students per counselor
