| 1. 1 nursing faculty to replace resignation of pediatics specialists during summer 2018. The BRN (Board of Registered Nursing, which accredits the program) requires full time faculty in four speciality areas 2. 4 math faculty are required to replace two retirments in spring of 2019 and to cover additional lecture hours required for the implementation of AB 705. additionl units will be added to pre-transfer and transfer level math courses to provide time for required interactive group work. See additional uploaded word document support. 3. The division is in support of a STEM counselor for YOP. some money has been provided to suppport part time hours by using dollars from MESA ans HSI STEM (METaS). but adjunct hours are difficult to coordinate and while it is clear it makes a difference having dedicated STEM counselors, it really requires a full time person. | |

| During fall of 2016, the division was awarded a 5 million dollar HSI STEM grant. The following year, the division was awarded a MESA grant. Both of these grants focus on imporoving student success by addressing the needs of 1) Hispanic students and/or 2) first generation and/or 3) low income. The divison is learning how to integrate the grant resources and how to leverage them. For example, upgrading an instuctional math classroom, providing funding for additional student tutors, funding for additional hours of STEM counseling and academic advisement, funding equipment for science departments, funding faculty time for development of an undergraduate science research course, etc. In addition, college resources and professional development funds have provided resources for the team of math faculty leading implementation of AB 705, which is proving to require many hours of work each week on the part of the lead faculty. Student success is the focus, and the division faculty and staff are trying to be as creative as possible and student centered as possible. Faculty are also aware of concerns surrounding equity and social justics and are looking at data to identify areas needing imporvement. Can some of these areas be impacted by use of grant funding? They are also attending workshops on cultural competency to improve student success.
The most important resource if full time faculty. Without their dedication to success of all students, no progress can be made. | |
