| An adjunct faculty member is working on writing and publishing a CSM Cosmetology Criteria; a manual on how our faculty would like all hands on operations performed. Historically the CBBC provided a book with recommended criteria, but since transitioning to the NIC Testing model, the CBBC no longer publishes this text. We believe an all-inclusive, professional vetted text with step-by-step instructions will be an immensely helpful tool for students that will become a dog-eared ‘take away’ that they will use throughout their careers as licensed cosmetologists.
When enrollment numbers increase and stabilize, the department would like to pursue a cosmetology night course that can be taken interchangeably with the day courses to accommodate working students with changing schedules and outside pressures and demands. A cross-over barbering course would also be a complimentary addition to our curriculum, eventually leading to a full barbering program. The nail program was incredibly successful at CSM and if the real estate behind our front desk, (building 5-251) could be returned to us, we would launch a nail program immediately. Although we have many requests for an esthetics program, we would not want to draw students away from Skyline. An in-depth analysis would have to be done to ensure there is a need/market for another esthetics program in this area.
The department has also discussed eventually holding an industry competition, and inviting all California cosmetology schools to participate. This could be an incredibly large event or we could limit the number of schools invited. With the current Theatre situation (no Theatre Manager, or IT support) this idea will be banked until the situation is solved. | |

| The September 26, 2018 PRIE CSM Degrees and Certificates Awarded 2006/2007 – 2016/2017 Report presented data that was surprising to us: 386 Certificates of Achievement or 92.8% of the major total and 30 Associate of Arts Degrees or 7.2% of the major total were awarded during this time frame. Certificate of Achievement data (number of students) seems low, but if 92.8% of program students declaring ‘cosmetology’ as their major are being awarded a certificate, we consider that a successful marker.
Major program revisions, and a historical trend of cosmetology students not having a formal educational plan in place, nor choosing cosmetology as their major, may have skewed the numbers during this ten year period. Students are now required to have an education plan mapped out which will give us better data moving forward; however, we will still engage in continuing analysis as these results are indicative of the need to disaggregate certificate and degree data for comparison with enrollment, retention, and completion to determine why more students are not achieving in both areas. | |

| A fully staffed department will provide students with the active support and educational experiences that transfer to retention and success, leading to licensing and positive career prospects. Institutional support will be necessary to fill vacancies left by one retiring faculty member and one tenure track faculty member that is no longer with us. An adjunct faculty pool is also needed, as we currently have no outside faculty available to substitute.
Collaborating with the Workforce Development team, Public Relations and Marketing, ACCEL, and other campus entities will improve enrollment and hopefully create more department connections with students interested in cosmetology. We need support from PR & Marketing to upgrade our marketing materials, to include: a three-fold brochure, website update, and video clips highlighting what our program offers.
Program Instructional Aides, Faculty, Program Assistant, and the Staff Assistant have requested a formal class on Accudemia. Partnering with the Learning Center to provide this class will shorten office time needed to correct student errors and create reports for withdrawal and completion paperwork. | |
