2a. Describe the results of your previous Program Review’s action plan.
f your answer is more than 2000 characters (approximately 300 words), please upload a Word document below (10 MB or less). If you’re not sure, please upload your answer. The transition from WebAccess to Canvas was completed for all geoscience courses. The course outlines that needed updating to maintain CI-D approval for the AS-T have been updated.
Some SLOs to improve student success were assessed.
PowerPoints were updated, more in-class activities were created and piloted, and new samples and demonstration props were purchased to promote academic excellence and increase student engagement.
To ensure the effective use of resources (Goal 5) the long-term plan to segregate the sample sets that are shared by 3 classes is underway. New samples have been purchased and/or collected to decrease the amount of sorting and reassembling of sample sets required. These chores often have very short turnaround times and require a good familiarity with the samples. This is especially important since the new lab technician is only scheduled to spend 25% of his time helping geosciences, has no geoscience background, and is finding it difficult to learn the samples.

Addressed in last paragraph of 2a.

3a. Course and program assessment. Discuss the results of your program assessment. Explain any strategies, research, initiatives, curriculum development or other activities intended to improve student learning and promote educational equity in your discipline, either at the course or program level.

In an effort to improve success rates in Ocen 100, the class with the lowest success rates, the course employed an SI to help the students for 3 semesters (spring 2016, fall 2016 and spring 2017). Although a few students expressed an appreciation for the SI’s help, very few students attended the SI sessions (possibly because they were held in the morning before class) and the success rates were both lower (43.8%), higher (60.6%) and very close to (51.1%) the average of the previous 3-semesters without an SI (51.4%). The continuation of a Supplemental Instructor in Ocen 100 is still desired, but the large time commitment is difficult for students to accommodate in their schedules and SI sessions in the morning before class is the least desirable time in my opinion. In fall of 2017, a volunteer provided free tutoring directly after class. The success rate that semester was 54.9%. Since reviewing class material soon after the lecture allows for greater retention of the material, a tutor with more flexible hours is preferred (and more cost effective) if the other option is an SI who can only hold SI sessions in the morning before class.

In addition to what was stated in 4b, I think the flex day activities and workshops, especially those of the last 4 semesters, have been helpful and informative.
