1. Briefly describe the position being requested (for example, biology faculty with expertise in anatomy).
While we are not asking for a new faculty position, we are requesting 20 additional FLCs to increase faculty staffing in the Writing Center.

2. Describe the rationale and motivation for the request. Include information on program LOAD; ratios of full-time FTEF to hourly FTEF and full-time to part-time faculty; recent faculty retirements; any mandates and regulations affecting the position; and any additional reasons, including impact on the community at large.
If your answer is more than 2000 characters (approximately 300 words), please upload a Word document below (10 MB or less). If you’re not sure, please upload your answer. Please upload text only; we cannot ensure that non-text such as images, diagrams, or charts will be retained in the final submission.
AB 705, which goes into effect in the Fall 2019 semester, will dramatically impact the way the English department serves students at CSM. While we are in the throes of deciding how to meet this challenge, we know that increased student support through the Writing Center will be critical. If granted, the Writing Center's FLC allocation would increase from 58 to 78 FLCs per semester, which would still leave Writing Center FLCs below pre-2008 funding levels. While continuing our current level of student support, we plan to increase the number of one-on-one writing conferences available to students who enroll in transfer-level English courses and who in the past would have been provided with one or two semesters of pre-transfer level instruction.

The immediate impact will be:
--increased drop in hours
--increased pre-scheduled, matched conferences
--targetting students with the most need

These are things we know help students and we know we cannot provide them at our current funding levels.

3. Discuss how the position will help the department and/or division meet goals and support student learning as described in most recent program review.
If your answer is more than 2000 characters (approximately 300 words), please upload a Word document below (10 MB or less). If you’re not sure, please upload your answer. Please upload text only; we cannot ensure that non-text such as images, diagrams, or charts will be retained in the final submission.
Our program review identified two essential support areas that the Writing Center needs to prioritize: students affected by AB 705, and students who need additional reading support across all courses. First, after siginificant discussion, our department has concluded that we need substantial and strategic out-of-class support for students taking ENGL 105. We know that Writing Center conferences give students crucial help developing their writing and reading skills, and we feel these are the best available options to support the students who will have been accelerated into transfer level English as of next fall. Second, with the absence of READ classes, the Writing Center is ready to step up and collaborate with faculty across campus to determine how to best support students' reading development. A big part of that support will certainly be one-on-one or group workshop reading conferences in the Writing Center.

With both of these new initiatives, the Center needs additional faculty units to make more conferences available.
